In dragonfruit planting, light supplement technology now is widely used in most planting bases in South China.

With better absorption of red and blue light by plants, the grow light regulates the growth cycle of dragonfruit, catalyze, and at the same time promote photosynthesis and improve quality.

Normally the supplement light are used in two periods:

  • In winter.  To promote photosynthesis and break dormancy to promote flowering.

  • In continuous raining or cloudy days of summer. Insufficient photosynthesis will cause insufficient sugar accumulation of dragon fruit. With the help of supplement light, photosynthesis is promoted, and the sweetness and taste of pitaya fruit are improved.

The light supplement time is generally during 6:00-8:00 p.m. and 9:00-11:00 p.m. The specific lighting time and duration are determined according to the local climate and temperature conditions.

The farms which used supplement lights will have 4-6 more batches per year.

Here we introduce the detailed light hanging method:

Along the dragon fruit planting row, in the middle of the planting row, set up a column every 4 meters.

The column is 50cm deep into the soil, 60cm higher than the dragon fruit plant.

Pull a galvanized steel wire on the top of the column and fix it on both ends of the line.

Hang the branch wire of the on the main cable.

The lamps should be distributed at equal distances. The distance of the lamps should be more than 3meter. Here in South Asia, most farms hang the lamp (UFO shape 15W, Model No.TALZPU2) every 1.5meter.

If the lamp distance more than 2m, it’s better to hang more bulbs between the rows for better supplement (9W Model No.TALZPAG1). Make sure each plant share the light averagely.

The height of the led light is around 60cm above the plant. Pay attention in parallel rows, the lamps should be installed in a crossover arrangement.

Please notice inducing dragon fruit into flowers needs to meet both temperature and light conditions, both of which are indispensable. It is difficult to form flowers when the temperature is lower than 15 ℃ or the light is less than 12 hours. Generally, the local temperature is above 15 ℃ and the sunshine is shorter than 12 hours.
